After Spending A Month In Jail, Mumbai High Court Granted Rhea Chakraborty Bail-In Drugs Case: After the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, on June 14, her girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was questioned concerning the actor’s death.
Rhea was arrested by the NCB on September 8, on charges of being a part of a drug syndicate operating in Mumbai. Her brother Showik was arrested on the same charges, four days before her.
Since her arrest, Rhea was in the Byculla jail cell.
After being in jail for more than a month, she was released hours after the Bombay High Court granted her bail.
Even though she was released on Rs. 1 lakh’s bond, but her brother Showik and alleged drug peddler Abdel Basit Parihar, bail plea was rejected.
JUDGE DISAGREES WITH NCB’S ARGUMENT
Justice Sarang V Kotwal, who passed the bail order, said: “Rhea is not part of the chain of drug dealers. She has not forwarded the drugs allegedly procured by her to somebody else to earn monetary or other benefits. Since she has no criminal antecedents, there are reasonable grounds for believing that she is not likely to commit any offence while on bail.”
Showik’s plea has been rejected because the applicant knew many drug dealers and was transacting with them. The order said: “At this stage, the investigating agency has sufficient material to show that Showik is a part of a chain of drug dealers engaged in illicit traffic of drugs.”
The judge even said that he disagrees with NCB’s argument that celebrities and role models should be treated harshly to set an example for younger generations. He said, “I disagree. Everybody is equal before the law.”
Rhea was spotted leaving the prison in a car that had its windows covered with newspapers. There were many reporters, cameramen, policemen, and others that gathered outside to cover the story. Even after the Mumbai Police warned the media earlier that day against “chasing celebrities and advocates” and “endangering everyone’s lives.”
