JK Rowling Criticised Over Transphobic Tweets: World-famous author and the creator of Harry Potter, J.K Rowling has once again found herself in the spotlight. However, this time it’s for the wrong reason. The British author and screenwriter have once again received a severe backlash for her transphobic tweets. For those of you who’d remember, J.K Rowling managed to stir a controversy just 5 months back over her transphobic remarks.
And the British author and screenwriter have once again been slammed for making yet another transphobic remark. It soon started a heated debate about sex and gender. Many lashed out at the best selling author and accused her of being transphobic and explained that gender could be different from what is assigned at birth for transgender people.
The Tweet That Stirred Up The Controversy
On June 7, 2020, Rowling took to Twitter and tweeted the following:
“People who menstruate, I am sure there’s a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?
Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate”
Minutes after tweeting, fans of the author lashed out her branding her as a TRANSPHOBE. However, Rolwing went to post yet another tweet defending the comments in her previous tweet. This is what she wrote:
“If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women is globally erased. I know, and I love trans people. However, erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.”
Rolowng followed it up by yet another tweet in which she defended her comment which incited the criticism. She tweeted:
“The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women-i.e to male violence-hate trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences-is a lie “
J.K Rowling Slammed For Defending Biological Sex
The Harry Potter author was massively slammed for her tweets and was trending within just 6 minutes of her tweet. This cheeky tweet on sex and gender has further fueled the feud between Rowling and the LBGTQ community. Despite defending her comments, Rolwing continued to receive backlash from everyone on Twitter. To get rid of the backlash, Rowling tweeted the following:
“I respect every trans person’s right to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them. Id march with you if you were discriminated against the basis of being trans. At the same time, my life is shaped by being female. I do not believe its hateful to say so.”
Till the very end, Rowling stood firm on her comments. However, she made sure she maintained the decorum of the conversation. But she continued to receive backlash from fans and critics alike.
