Mayor Bill de Blasio has finally agreed to the $1 billion cut from NYPD budget following the “defund the Police” protest.
Many activists and members of City Council were demanding that a billion-dollar cut from the $6 billion budget for NYPD.
It was POLITICO that first reported the news on Sunday night. The report said that the Mayor’s office had agreed to the demands laid out by City Council and protestors.
Let’s know more about the whole issue.
$1 billion cut from NYPD
De Blasio, who had initially tried to resist the demands, had finally confirmed in a press meeting on Monday that the Police department budget will be slashed by $1 billion.
De Blasio declined to divulge details of the agreement in the public. He did say that there will be a shift for the school safety agents over several years.
The mayor told the reporters, “I am excited to say that we have a plan that can achieve real reform, that can achieve real redistribution, and at the same time ensure that we keep our city safe.”
An extra $500 million budget cut on the top of $1 billion will happen. The money will instead be spent on public housing developments and recreation centres for youth.
“Defund the police” protests
The protests started after the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor at hands of Police. Although the protests have come to the forefront, it has been around for a long time.
The protests make a straightforward and simple demand and it is what it says. Defund the police and spend that significant amount of money on more important community issues.
They demand that this significant budget cut should instead be invested in education and housings for marginalised communities in the States.
This demand has always been a quiet murmur for some time. It had once come forth in 2014, Missouri, during the protests against Police brutality in Ferguson.
The death of George Floyd has catapulted the whole nation into a series of protests and rage over the racism. And this is why the issue has come forth in stronger voices.
The utilisation of the funds
The co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Cullors expressed her opinions on the matter. She said that this fund will be instead used in the service of those marginalised communities.
Cullors said in an interview that defunding the police will reduce their ability to have those resources that harm their communities.
“It’s about reinvesting those dollars into black communities, communities that have been deeply divested from,” she said.
