Trump Terminates Relations With The WHO
U.S President Donald Trump has announced that America will terminate its relationship with the World Health Organisation (WHO). He said that the level of control China has over the WHO is unacceptable. Payments to the body coordinating the response to the pandemic had previously been frozen pending a review. This comes amid growing tensions between the US and China over COVID-19
This is what the POTUS said in his statement:
“We have detailed reforms that it must make and engage with them directly. However, they (WHO) have refused to act. And because they’ve failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating our relationship with the WHO. We will be redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs.”
Trump also accused Beijing officials of failing to meet reporting obligations following COVID-19 to spread across the globe. He has held China responsible for allowing the virus to break free and causing over 100,000 deaths just in the US. China’s coverup of the Wuhan virus allowed the disease to spread and leaving people dead along the way.
Trump Announces Actions Against China
The President has echoed the global call for an investigation into the origin and the handling of the virus. He said the following while speaking to the Press on May 29.
“China has total control over the World Health Organisation. Despite only paying $40M per year compared to what the US has been paying which is approximately $450M a year. China raided our factories, offshored our jobs, gutted our industries, and stole our intellectual property.”
Donald Trump’s stance against China and its government has been an aggressive one since day 1 of the outbreak. He accused China of violating its commitments under the World Trade Organisation. Trump said that China is considered a developing nation and has been getting all the benefits, just like every other developing nation. He deemed China ‘UNFIT’ for receiving all of these benefits.
In addition to all this, Trump held the past presidents of the US responsible for letting China get away with this theft. Although, he praised his administration for negotiating and fighting for what was and is right
