When it comes to video game franchises, Final Fantasy has been one the most successful so far. Created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy is a Japanese sci-fi media franchise developed by Square Enix. The franchise centres on a series of fantasy and science fantasy role-playing video games. Final Fantasy made its debut way back in 1987. Since then, the franchise has gone to release eight instalments in the game series.
The previous release was the Final Fantasy VII remake which released in April 2020. Though it has been only a couple of months, fans of the game are desperately waiting for the next game in the series, i.e. Final Fantasy 16/XVI. The release of Final Fantasy XV in 2016 put the franchise back on track. And it has given Square Enix an ample amount of time to kick off the new development.
So let’s dig into the details regarding the release date, expected storyline, and several new updates.
Final Fantasy XVI/16
According to leaks floating around the Internet, Final Fantasy 16 could be inspired by Dark Souls. However, it will retain the combat elements from Final Fantasy XV. The entire Final Fantasy franchise has been a massive multiplayer role-playing game (MMORPG). But according to a recent statement from Yoshi P, FF 16 doesn’t sound like much of an MMO.
Since the game hasn’t been officially announced yet, the release date is yet unknown. As per the latest rumours, Square Enix plans to unveil the game in the Summer of 2020. The company has established a preliminary release date for the game. Currently, they have scheduled the release for the company’s fiscal window 2021 or a timed exclusive to PS5 in 2022.
What To Expect From Final Fantasy XVI?
Final Fantasy is an action Japenese RPG with strategic elements. Some of those elements include:
- Openworld exploration of the game
- Macro-areas of cities and dungeons within the open world
- Free exploration of entire continents.
The main director of the project is Naoki Yoshida, and the game has a classic fantasy concept with a steampunk element. Simultaneously, it has a battle system inspired by Dark Souls and Final Fantasy XV. The game will also see the return of the jobs system but in a different key from the classics. Along with that, there will be the ability to customize and change the equipment and event the names of the characters.
The project began its development in 2017 with Unreal Engine 4. However, the team hasn’t decided to convert the game for Unreal Engine 5 in the future. The DLC’s and expansions of the game are still in the planning phase by the development team.
