The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season Four
At the end of 2019, viewers were on tenterhooks waiting for news about the future of the show. Following the third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Fortunately, it took Amazon less than a week to announce that it wasn’t done with Maisel yet.
Here’s all we know about the fourth season of Maisel.
“Costume fittings are happening [now], sets are being built like mad. All of the stuff is happening,” Sherman-Palladino said, per TVLine, adding, “We’re breaking our stories, we’re writing. And then in December we’re dragging the actors in and we’re going to table read the scripts. And then, come January 7, it’s, ‘On your mark, get set, go.'”
A source at Amazon told TVLine, however, that that date could still change given the current coronavirus crisis. Rachel Brosnahan, known as Midge to Maisel fans, told Parade that she wanted to see the rising comedian “pick herself back up and find out how to take the next move differently having” endured everything that season three threw at her in season four.
“She and Susie have a lot to learn together still,” Brosnahan added.
Sherman-Palladino says viewers should expect Midge to deal with the setback she experienced at the end of season three.
“We may be doing a little jump within the season, but when we first start up we want to [stay in that time],” she told the Hollywood Reporter. “I mean, what’s the fun of totally destroying someone’s soul and heart and not getting to see the aftermath? That’s what comedy’s made of, soul-crushing defeat.”
Amazon Announces The Renewal And Are Thrilled!
“We were thrilled to hear that for the fourth time, we do not have to pack up and vacate the premises,” the Palladinos said in a statement. “We’d like to thank Amazon for all their faith and support, their partnership and enthusiasm and for letting us hang with our favorite people, the cast and crew of Maisel, for a little while longer.”
Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, noted that the show continues to be a success, saying “the series’ most watched opening weekend ever” was Maisel’s season three premiere.
The production of the fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, is expected to begin in early 2021.
“We’re starting back on January 7,” series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino announced Thursday during a Woodstock Film Festival virtual panel discussion (moderated by yours truly). “Costume fittings are happening [now], sets are being built like mad. All of the stuff is happening.
“We’re breaking our stories, we’re writing,” she added. “And then in December we’re dragging the actors in and we’re going to table read the scripts. And then, come January 7, it’s, ‘On your mark, get set, go.”
Delay Due To The Coronavirus Situation
An Amazon insider cautions that the Jan. 7 date could fluctuate, as with all COVID-era productions.
EP Fellow Daniel Palladino noted that while Maisel will look and sound like the same show when it returns, one creative tweak to the ambitious development of the series will be needed by COVID protocols and restrictions.
“There will be a lot more visual effects because there are limits to what we can do,” he explained. “Last season, our premiere had 850 extras in an airplane hangar. We cannot do that.”
Palladino continued to assure supporters that Maisel Season 4 is “going to happen, it’s only going to happen in a slightly different way.”
